The role is majority based on-site at Essex Record Office, Wharf Road, Chelmsford, with occasional requirements for surveying or records collection elsewhere and some limited capacity for working at home.

Established in 1938, the Essex Record Office cares for documents, maps, images and sound and video recordings that together tell the stories of over 1,000 years of Essex history. Our holdings, which include parish registers, diaries, letters, court records, wartime records, manorial records and school records, take up nearly 8 miles of shelving, making us one of the largest county archives in England. We are also home to the Essex Sound and Video Archive which includes over 30,000 recordings.
The Essex Sound and Video Archive collects sound recordings and videos covering all aspects of life and culture in Essex, with particular focus on oral history, broadcast material and music. We also offer a range of sound and video services including talks and presentations, audio digitisation, oral history training and audio-visual archives consultancy.
The Sound Archivist is responsible for providing a professional archive service, providing assistance to the public and promoting the service to increase public access to the collections. The role involves supervision of technical staff and the Sound Archivist takes responsibility for the income-generating activities of the Sound and Video Archive.
We are seeking an experienced and flexible professional to participate in the full range of activities of the Essex Sound and Video Archive in order to preserve and provide access to archival sound and video recordings. This will involve accessioning, cataloguing, answering enquiries, supervising volunteers, and giving talks and presentations. Liaison with depositors, both commercial and individual customers, and a range of stakeholders is necessary. The development of preservation projects to digitise resources and identification of opportunities for outreach will be expected whilst working in conjunction with fundraising officers at Essex County Council and partner organisations.
· Responsible for cataloguing and indexing collections of Essex Sound and Video Archive
· Acting as a subject matter expert in undertaking presentations, talks and thematic programmes to highlight aspects of life and culture in Essex's past
· Acting as liaison with commercial and individual customers and a range of stakeholders
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
As well as enthusiasm and a customer-focussed approach, you will need:
· Education to degree level
· Diploma/MA in Archive Administration or equivalent postgraduate professional qualification
· Evidence of continuing professional development illustrating expert knowledge in a relevant professional area
· Membership of the Archives and Records Association, or active evidence of working towards this
· Substantial experience of using sound recording and/or digital transfer equipment
· Significant experience of working in an archive, with knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of archive administration and surveying records
· Close understanding of sound and video archives with a proven focus on local history, oral history, broadcast material or music
· Excellent interpersonal skills to instruct and supervise technical staff and volunteers
· Good interpersonal liaison skills to network and seek new opportunities for commercial work within the archive and related sectors, and carry out collaborative work with a range of partners
· Good IT skills with experience in the use of computers for cataloguing and other record office purposes, and working knowledge of MS Office suite of programmes
· Strong communication skills and customer care, with the ability to deliver presentations and provide services to a range of communities
