Closing date

As the Highways Director, you will lead and deliver the transformation of the Highways Division, to effectively deliver the adopted Future Highways Model.

Highways issues are, as ever, at the top of the Derbyshire public’s agenda. The council’s goal for improving customer focus and satisfaction means that you will have experience in putting highway users at the centre of day-to-day operations, to drive the management of the network and determine maintenance and improvement priorities. This includes dealing with the growing challenges associated with Flood and Drainage.

You will lead and contribute to the development of the Derbyshire economy in support of post-Covid recovery and the levelling-up agenda. You will lead and deliver the future highways model – OurFHM - transformation programme of service redesign aiming for classleading performance in the highways sector. This will involve getting the best out of a blend of in-house and external resources.

We have a large annual highways capital programme, totalling some £120m+ over the next 3 years, and you will need to be able to prioritise clearly and drive best value from our partners and our team. Underpinning your success will be helping to reduce the impact of climate change with a leading contribution to the council’s decarbonisation and sustainability goals.

This exciting role require successful candidates to:

• have excellent strategic leadership skills and be able to lead, influence and motivate employees successfully through change, while maintaining a strong performance culture.

• have a proven ability to interpret wider strategic objectives to deliver high quality services aligned to our key priorities in the Council Plan.

• have strong partnership skills that will deliver focused services and projects as part of wider work programmes.

• play a key role in our continued progress in being recognised as an ‘enterprising council’, looking at innovative ways to deliver our services through new delivery models.

Derbyshire is a wonderful place to live, visit and work. The post will be based at County Hall at Matlock, in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales.
