The Role

  • Are you looking for working arrangements that enhance your work-life balance?
  • Do you want to join a positive and ambitious team?
  • Do you have excellent understanding of national, regional and local transport strategy and associated legislative requirements and policy guidance?

If you answered yes, we want to hear from you.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Spatial and Transport Planning service for a Transport Planner.  You will take a key role delivering transport services for half a million residents and our businesses and visitors.  Working in the Transport Strategy Team, you will provide definitive professional advice for the Councils, creating and applying transport policy and strategy and best practice and delivering successful outcomes for a range of sustainable transport initiatives. There has never been a more challenging – or rewarding – time to work for Richmond and Wandsworth.

About the role:

The Transport Planner will assist in day to day liaison with Transport for London (TfL) on the Local Implementation Plan; progression of major transportation projects/initiatives, travel awareness initiatives and provision of expert transportation , as well as traffic and highway engineering advice into the development management system.

You will probably have a degree in transport or planning or other appropriate professional qualification. The role presents a great opportunity to enhance your interpersonal skills and knowledge in an organisation committed to supporting personal development. You will learn how to manage and prioritise projects and programmes cutting across teams and stakeholders in a fast paced environment.

The role is based within the Shared Staffing Arrangement and will involve working on a range of projects across Wandsworth and Richmond Councils. A minimum of two years’ transport planning experience in local government or private practice is sought. Knowledge of electric vehicles and e-mobility would be useful.

You can expect to work on high profile projects, including the plans to remove the Wandsworth one-way system and to revitalise Twickenham Riverside, as well as on programmes such as cycling and school streets – all helping to support the Councils’ climate change strategies.

Who are we:

Wandsworth is a thriving inner London Borough on the southern banks of the River Thames that is steeped in a diverse history. The borough features landmarks such as the iconic Battersea Power Station, Ram Brewery and Clapham Junction Station, and is acknowledged for its famous green spaces such as Wandsworth and Clapham Commons, Putney Heath and the Grade II* listed Battersea Park.

We are positive and ambitious – When you join us, you’ll apply the same approach.

You will:

  • Take a key role in a small team of Transport Strategy professionals in providing definitive and professional advice for the councils.
  • Create and apply transport policy and strategy and deliver successful sustainable travel outcomes.
  • Help to deliver a high quality, robust and transparent Transport Strategy service.
  • Ensure decision making within tight time frames and that the Spatial and Transport Planning service is recognised as delivering an excellent service for all of our customers.
