Director of Communities and Housing

Employer
Malvern Hills District Council and Wychavon District Council
Location
Malvern, Worcestershire
Salary
Up to £91k inc.
Closing date
19 Jul 2021

This role takes the lead on a broad portfolio of responsibilities that includes:

  • Housing strategy
  • Housing options and homelessness
  • Community engagement and development
  • Community safety
  • Arts, culture and sport
  • Health improvement

You’ll work to ensure the delivery of both councils’ commitments to increase the availability of affordable housing in our districts. That will see 1,000 new homes in Wychavon by 2024, with at least 15% of these being in rural areas. Malvern Hills District Council has committed to deliver 550 new homes and bring 200 currently empty homes back into use by 2025.

You’ll work closely with a range of partners to reduce the risk of rough sleeping and establish new facilities that offer housing and wider support to single homeless people.

Community engagement is central to the role, and we are working hard with others to develop initiatives that will help to reduce isolation and loneliness across all age groups in the districts. A key part of this will be encouraging and facilitating community and volunteer initiatives. Enhancing local transport will also be a priority to support better connectivity, reduce isolation and support the districts’ economies.

You’ll also take the lead on the implementation of an asset-based community development strategy, working with local people to ensure that they have the facilities and tools that will support vibrant and involved communities. This will link closely to your work to promote events and campaigns in relation to sport, health and culture, supporting improved health and well-being outcomes within the community.

While we don’t have a very prescriptive view of what your professional background should be, we’ll expect you to demonstrate previous leadership and delivery experience in a number of the key aspects of the role’s portfolio – and a relevant professional qualification will be a plus. It’s essential that you are an accomplished and effective leader of people. You must have a clear sense of how to bring about cultural and operational change, getting the best from others (often across different professional disciplines) and supporting professional development and accountability.
