Do you want to pursue a career in Stonemasonry and work on York’s City walls a nationally-important monument?

You will join an established and knowledgeable team of five stonemasons  and will learn techniques for the repair and conservation of stone as well as how to follow detailed design instructions.  You will also be taught how to create architectural stonemasonry and how to fix masonry on site.

Your tasks may include:

  • carrying out repairs to stonework;
  • repointing, including with lime mortars;
  • controlled dismantling and re-building of parts of the City Walls, including recording positions of stone for the purpose of rebuilding; and,
  • working under archaeological watching brief and scheduled monument consent.

Candidates should hold two GCSEs grade D/3 or above, or equivalent in Maths and English. Predicted grades will be accepted at application stage, but confirmation/certificates will need to be provided before any job offer is made.

Proposed start date is no later than 27 September 2021 and is a fixed term contract for 27 months.
