This role is fixed term for a period of 2 years

This skilled and dedicated team forms part of the LA’s initiative to reduce exclusions.  As part of Inclusive Learning Services, the Fair Access Team works closely with a range of colleagues within this multi-professional service to support young people at risk of exclusion or who have been excluded either permanently or on a fixed term basis. Our family of schools have created an exciting post to support some of our most vulnerable youngsters to further drive down exclusions and keep our youngsters in mainstream schools. The successful candidate will also support young children transitioning out of our Primary Pupil Referral Unit – The Primrose Centre.

While there will be an extensive training programme, induction and on-going support from colleagues, when out in schools there is an expectation that the successful candidate will represent the Fair Access Team and be able to work both independently and as a team member within school settings.

The post involves supporting the Fair Access Team by:

  • Attending, when necessary Fair Access Panels to prioritise youngsters for intervention
  • Opening a case file and liaising with key school staff and other agencies who may be working with the young person
  • Supporting identified pupils in class, although on occasions it may be appropriate to do some individual or small group work involving the targeted pupil.
  • Working in collaboration with school and ILS staff
  • Working closely with families and wider agencies including colleagues from The Police, Early Help Teams and Social Care and Family Support Worker
  • Working as an advocate for the young person meeting with a range of stakeholders to include, head teachers, parents and carers and outside agencies.

Ideally, we are looking for somebody with resilience, commitment and energy to support our young people in maintaining their place in mainstream education. An ability to build rapport and relationships with both young people and stakeholders is crucial as is, a sense of humour!

The successful applicants can expect to be welcomed in to a dedicated team of professionals equally committed to achieving the best outcomes for the young people of Sandwell. You will have access to:

  • Fair Access panels and have access to every School in Sandwell
  • Excellent CPD opportunities
  • Multi-agency teams within ILS and the wider Council
  • Regular opportunities for supervision
  • Ongoing support from the wider Sandwell family

You will be required to hold NNEB or BTEC or NVQ Level 3 or equivalent (NB, qualification must be related to Child Development/Education).  Desirable:- degree or similar in teaching, psychology, counselling or SEN.

The role is subject to an enhanced barring children's DBS check.
