Our green ambitions, fuelled by your expertise, will power and inspire Gloucestershire and beyond

Whilst perhaps best known for its stunning landscapes, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and protected Green Belt land, Gloucestershire also enjoys a prosperous economy and, despite the impacts of COVID-19, has recently been referenced as the UK county most likely to recover strongly from the pandemic.

We’ve worked hard to move projects forward that will secure future growth, including our multi-million pound transport and highways infrastructure programme, our ambitious economic growth agenda to provide 100,000 new homes, businesses, shops and leisure facilities over the next 30 years, and making significant progress with our climate change commitments. We want Gloucestershire to excel as a county at the centre of innovation, where big ideas come to life and potential is unlocked. With GCHQ and our new cyber park, together with our bid to home the first fusion reactor to produce electricity in the world by 2040, we aim to be at the centre of clean energy production and the digital revolution. In support of these aims, we have created two new Director roles to look to the future and lead us on our journey to success.

In the newly created role of Director of Economy & Environment, you will play a leading role in driving forward the county’s ambitious growth programme. You will take the lead in developing strategic policies across all areas of economic growth and environmental services, working in close partnership with our district councils to influence the county’s development over the next 30 years. Our ambition is to ensure that our residents, businesses and visitors enjoy a greener, healthier and more inclusive life and that our county continues to remain an attractive place to live, work and relax.

Reporting to the Executive Director for Economy, Environment and Infrastructure, you will lead the council’s bid submission to host the fusion project which, if successful, will cement Gloucestershire as the home of the world’s first ever fusion power plant. In addition, you will contribute to our Golden Valley Development programme to deliver 200 hectares of land for 8,000 new homes, businesses, shops and leisure facilities, contributing to the future of our local economy.

Importantly, you will be executive lead for the council’s brand new employment, skills, education and training hub, creating a “one-stop-shop” for the people of Gloucestershire; the first of its kind in the country. This, alongside leading our all-important climate change strategy in collaboration with Elected Members, means that we require an ambitious and committed leader who will ensure the council meets its vision to improve the quality of life for everyone.
