Our green ambitions, fuelled by your expertise, will power and inspire Gloucestershire and beyond

Whilst perhaps best known for its stunning landscapes, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and protected Green Belt land, Gloucestershire also enjoys a prosperous economy and, despite the impacts of COVID-19, has recently been referenced as the UK county most likely to recover strongly from the pandemic.

We’ve worked hard to move projects forward that will secure future growth, including our multi-million pound transport and highways infrastructure programme, our ambitious economic growth agenda to provide 100,000 new homes, businesses, shops and leisure facilities over the next 30 years, and making significant progress with our climate change commitments. We want Gloucestershire to excel as a county at the centre of innovation, where big ideas come to life and potential is unlocked. With GCHQ and our new cyber park, together with our bid to home the first fusion reactor to produce electricity in the world by 2040, we aim to be at the centre of clean energy production and the digital revolution. In support of these aims, we have created two new Director roles to look to the future and lead us on our journey to success.

In the newly created role of Director of Transport & Highways, you will play a leading role in driving forward Gloucestershire’s ambitious, fast-paced multi-million pound transport and highways infrastructure programme. With proven experience of delivering results at speed in a senior transport, highways or engineering-focused role, you will ensure the county benefits from much improved connectivity, alongside supporting the growth of the local economy and our natural environment.

Reporting to the Executive Director for Economy, Environment and Infrastructure, as Director you will lead on the development of the council’s long-term strategy for transport across Gloucestershire, as well accelerating the delivery of the capital improvements programme and leading the operational maintenance of highways assets and our major projects portfolio. As a priority, you will develop and enhance the county’s active and sustainable travel agenda, working closely with Elected Members to ensure the council reaches its carbon neutral ambitions.

So far, we have made good progress with some of our major infrastructure plans, including an extension to Junctions 9 and 10 of the busy M5 motorway that runs through the heart of the county, as well as improvements to the A417 missing link to deliver a safe, resilient and free-flowing road. But there is still much more to do. We now seek an accomplished and expert leader to ensure the council meets its vision to improve the quality of life for everyone.
