About us

Employed by London Borough of Camden the post holder will be based in North London Waste Authority (NLWA), serving Camden and six other north London boroughs. You will be responsible for providing communications and administrative support to enable the successful delivery of our communications objectives and you’ll be working on a £1.2 bn construction programme to build new waste and recycling facilities for north London.

The role

We have an exciting environmental communications opportunity for the right individual looking for a contract position in local government.  The role will include proactive PR, social media management, campaigns, publications production and internal communications as well as day-to-day administrative support for the communications function.

This post holder will work closely with, and report in to the Communications Manager for the North London Heat and Power Project, a programme which will deliver:

  • a replacement Energy Recovery Facility to process waste into low carbon energy;
  • a new hub for recycling and recovering resources known as a Resource Recovery Facility, which will include a new Reuse and Recycling Centre that will be open to the public;
  • a new education and community centre known as EcoPark House

The role involves working in a complex industry where there will be need to juggle competing priorities to achieve results. The post holder will be required to make specific contact with a range of people and organisations. This work requires the ability to communicate at all levels with audiences that have varying degrees of knowledge and understanding of waste related issues, in order to maintain stakeholder relationships and ensure continuation of projects and delivery of key targets.  Audiences vary from residents to MPs, to waste industry experts and borough officers.

The rewards include the opportunity to work on a nationally significant infrastructure project at a time of heightened environmental awareness where there will be the chance to make a real difference.

You should have a communications or marketing qualification or experience in delivering social or digital or other communications activities. Your expertise in communications should be coupled with experience of providing administrative or communications support in a busy environment and managing competing priorities. Essential requirements include good organisational skills and an ability to manage often conflicting demands and prioritise accordingly.

You should be able to develop productive relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders combined with excellent internal and external customer service skills.

Having excellent verbal and written communications skills you should also be able to use these skills to achieve results and build relationships. The ability to write and edit clear, concise copy for different target audiences within tight deadlines is a must as well as the ability to use your initiative to drive forward key projects and achieve results, in line with objectives.

The role involves liaising with the media and communications professionals, including designers, writing for different target audiences – including media, online and printed materials and the ability to manage social media channels.

If you are looking for a varied role in local government communications, then this role could be for you.
