Job introduction

The Highway Asset & Maintenance team provides a critical service for the city, maintaining and improving its highest-value asset. The team is responsible for managing and maintaining the city’s carriageway surfaces, drainage, footways and other highway assets in a way that best meets the needs of the present without passing on unaffordable costs to future generations. This involves balancing numerous calls on a multi-million-pound budget for highway repairs and preventative work and ensuring there is a robust inspection and repair regime in place.

As the Operations Team Manager, you will use a variety of established and innovative civil engineering approaches to deliver value for money and excellent standards of service on the public highway. Through programming and public consultation, you’ll aim to minimise the adverse effects and disruption of highway works, whilst ensuring public safety and the integrity of the highway network.

The city places emphasis on high-quality, forward-thinking, sustainable development and travel solutions. As a council we are committed to creating a more liveable city in which residents and visitors feel healthier, safer, more socially connected and included.

Join us in Brighton and Hove – a unique, energetic, diverse centre for culture in the South East and an exciting place to develop your career.

About the role

Are you passionate about delivering change that has a long-lasting, positive impact on people’s lives and where they live? This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-profile service that has a direct influence on the way that everyone travels around Brighton & Hove.

We are one of the busiest Highway Authorities outside London and this role is central to maintaining and improving the city’s highest-value asset - it’s highway network – and delivering aims of the ambitious Local Transport Plan.

As Brighton & Hove’s Highway Operations Manager you’ll have a wide-reaching impact, working to ensure the city’s roads, pavements and cycle paths are well-maintained and improved to meet the varying needs of our diverse communities, as well as our ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The condition of the city’s highway network affects all residents, businesses and visitors, so you’ll be joining a service in the public eye. A strong customer ethos, collaborative approach and excellent communication skills are therefore important. As the successful candidate you will have strong leadership skills and experience of managing large-scale projects and work packages, as well as a track record of successfully developing and delivering change.

As a manager, you’ll work to the Head of Traffic Management, helping set the strategic direction for City Transport. You will be based in our modern, open plan offices in the city centre and benefit from flexible working, including home-working. Joining an enthusiastic and supportive team, you’ll collaborate with colleagues from a range of fields, working closely with the Transport Project teams to deliver transport infrastructure changes across the city.

For an informal discussion, please contact Andrew Westwood at andrew.westwood@brighton-hove.gov.uk

On applying, you will need to upload your CV and answers to some shortlisting questions.

Closing date: 5 January 2022.

Interview date: w/c 17 January 2022.

We welcome applications from all sections of the community but particularly encourage applicants from a BME or White Other background as well as those who identify as disabled, LGB, female or trans as these groups are currently under-represented in our Directorate workforce.
