A unique opportunity to shape a new authority for our communities.

We may be a new unitary authority, but we have bold ambitions. Formed in April 2021, we have a unique opportunity to do things differently and create an exciting future for our local communities. We are committed to tackling inequality in all its forms and levelling up our communities to ensure everyone, regardless of background, can thrive and reach their full potential.

We’ve made great progress on creating a modern, forward-thinking council, with a strong network of senior leaders and a “one team” approach to overcome our challenges and seize opportunities. We also have a brand-new Corporate Plan for 2021-2025 and are excited about the next chapter of our journey.

About the role

This is an opportunity to join us as our Director of Public Health, reporting into the Executive Director of Adults, Communities & Wellbeing, David Watts. Dedicated to the communities of North Northamptonshire, you’ll be passionate about tackling health inequalities and improving the lives, health and wellbeing of our diverse communities. You’ll also be able to support our ongoing response to, and recovery from, the Covid-19 pandemic. We have a fantastic opportunity, right now, to work together in a new way across health and care systems. The formation of a new Integrated Care System, as well as the opportunity afforded by the creation of a new council, means there is a truly unique chance to innovate and collaborate for the benefit of the health and wellbeing of over 350,000 people in the borough.

We are seeking a forward-thinking and innovative Director of Public Health, who is committed to making improvements to the health and wellbeing of our residents, reducing health inequalities across North Northamptonshire. You will be strategic, collaborative and will work with colleagues across the council and with health partners to align public health ambitions with strategic plans within the council and the wider system.

As a new council, there is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to define our focus and our ambitions, through a new Health and Wellbeing Strategy that will set a trajectory for the future. You will join us on an exciting journey to lead and shape the future of public health services and the delivery of our vision, to be a place that enables active fulfilled lives; creates connected communities and that enhances community resilience to achieve better and brighter futures for our residents.

About you

You will have a proven track record in health improvement and reduction of health inequalities and will be able to demonstrate experience of driving better quality and outcomes for communities. You must be highly motivated, collaborative, team oriented and resilient. Importantly, you’ll bring well-developed people skills that will help us to shape a new team, with a positive culture and ways of working that can help us to fulfil our ambitions. In addition, you will need to demonstrate good political acumen, influencing skills and be capable of working right across the council and the wider system to recognise the wider determinants of health and establish programmes to tackle them.
