Birmingham City Council is looking for their new Assistant Director of Strategy, Commissioning & Transformation. This is an influential role in one of the biggest local authorities in Europe, working at pace to be a 21st Century Council. For this directorate, it means delivering and achieving the best possible outcomes for children and young people in Birmingham so that they are enabled to thrive and achieve their full potential

Reporting to the Executive Director of Children Services, Sue Harrison, you will be part

of the Leadership of Children’s Services, working together with young people, parents, and key stakeholders to reshape and improve our directorate. You will also be a system leader, working with our partners across Birmingham to reshape and improve our local system for supporting your children and young people and enabling them to thrive.

This is a broad portfolio with the responsibility for all children and young people living in Birmingham. This role offers the opportunity to deliver improved outcomes for children across education, health, and care. It also comes with the responsibility for and management of a large team with associated budgets.

Key deliverables include improving the quality, experience and outcomes for children and their families and mobilizing the whole system in Birmingham to do this effectively.

To succeed in this role, you will need to be somebody who has children and young people at the very heart of your values and professional practice. You will be comfortable as a true systems and inclusive leader working across the organisation and with both strategic and local partnerships. You will be driven to deliver quality services to support the education and skills development of the young people and children of Birmingham enabling them to access opportunities, meet their potential, and thrive.

The development and implementation of a five-year strategic plan will be central to delivering on this ambition. A strong track record of strategy development and implementation, supported by evidence of transformation and cultural change will be essential. You will be an outcomes focused people manager skilled at managing diversity and operating in a complex environment.

As the Directorate’s Commissioning lead, a working knowledge and understanding of commissioning in the social care, education and health space is essential, ensuring quality, value for money and social value is delivered across all services. You will be driven by data, monitoring, and assessing performance, and use this in collaboration with others to shape best practice.

This is an important role with huge responsibilities. One where you can shape a service which has the potential to make the biggest impact in and across the lives of children and young people both now and in the future.
