Job Details

Chelmsford City Theatres are looking for a skilled and motivated Technical & Buildings Manager to join the team as the venue embarks on a transformational refurbishment and rebranding programme this summer alongside an exciting period of development to diversify its activities on and off stage and engage widely with current and potential audiences.

The theatres (Civic and Cramphorn) welcome a wide programme of music, comedy, family shows, dramas, musicals, live screenings, a range of amateur hires as well as a highly acclaimed annual pantomime.  There is also a developing programme of in-house work and external outdoor events.

The theatre complex sits at the heart of Chelmsford City, working within an ambitious local authority who are working hard to raise Chelmsford’s cultural profile.

The Technical & Buildings Manager leads the technical department and coordinates the asset and facilities management functions for the theatres and outdoor events to ensure that all activities are operating to the highest technical presentation standards, budgets, Health & Safety compliance, maintenance and contractor management and leading liaison with local and national visiting theatre companies and suppliers.

This role is a member of the theatre’s management team and represents an exciting opportunity for an experienced technical individual to shape the future of Chelmsford Theatres, working closely with the new Theatre Director to realise the future vision.  In addition, the theatre has just replaced its lighting stock following a successful capital bid and this summer, as part of the refurbishment programme, will invest heavily in new sound equipment and installation.

The role is responsible for managing and building a permanent and casual team, and ensuring efficient, cost-effective and robust operations and practices are in place to support our future.  This is a varied role including a good mixture of both planning and management and practical, technical work including the opportunity to lead aspects of in house, co-productions, and external events.

Previous technical experience in a live entertainment context is essential and we are keen to hear from candidates from a wide range of backgrounds.

Chelmsford City Council is committed to safeguarding vulnerable groups and expects all employees to share this commitment and have a range of policies and procedures in place which promote safer working practices across our services. The Council’s Safer Recruitment process contains pre-employment vetting which includes training, obtaining references and ensuring compliance with the Disclosure and Barring Service process.
