Thriving local businesses and growing healthy lifestyles.

Make the connection.

For infrastructure to be successful, it has to connect with the people who use it. We’ll look to you as our Senior Strategic Planner to make sure those connections work brilliantly. That every decision we make reflects East Sussex’s needs – commercial, community and environmental – connecting families, friends and visitors with businesses and places across our county.

The role

Working with our Principal Strategic Planner, you will support evidence gathering, analysis and insight that helps local planning authorities develop their plans for housing and employment in their areas.

You will also assist in co-ordinating the team’s work in identifying communities’ infrastructure needs with other internal colleagues, co-ordinate our responses to planning applications on county council infrastructure requirements and support managing the use of development contributions to deliver county council infrastrustructure to meet our communities needs such as new school places, library improvements and recycling facilities.

You’ll be a valued source of advice on strategic planning policy issues too.

The team

You’ll be joining our creative and collaborative Infrastructure Planning and Place function. As well as managing the development and delivery of our Transport Plan and working with our Borough and District Councils on their Local Plans; this is a team that has secured over £20m to invest in walking and cycling schemes, is running a multi-million pound engagement programme of walking and cycling initiatives, and is working with our Major Projects & Growth team to build the case for Government investment in our major roads and railways that connect East Sussex.

About you

With a relevant degree (or equivalent), ideally you’ll be a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute or working towards qualification. Beyond this, it’s your approach that counts. We’re looking for a strong communicator and analyst with relevant experience and achievement who is highly organised and can generate creative solutions to complex problems.

We recognise the benefits of supporting our staff to work flexibly and there are a range of ways in which service delivery and personal commitments can be balanced. We offer staff the opportunity to work in a hybrid way where the nature of their job role makes this possible and in a culture that places value on outputs that drive forward our strategic objectives and benefits our residents. However we also recognise the importance of always retaining a strong sense of belonging and team identity Additional benefits include a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension scheme, travel discounts, and more. But it’s the chance to create lasting connections across East Sussex you’ll find most attractive here, whilst being part of an excellent and rewarding team that is directly at the heart of driving sustainable economic growth, improving transport connectivity in the county and achieving net zero carbon emissions.

We make diversity, equity, and inclusion part of everything we do – our projects, our strategies and our workforce. It’s the only way to ensure our county gets the connections it needs and deserves.
