The County Council, as Highway Authority, is engaged with National Highways to support delivery of the A66 Trans-Pennine project.  £1billion is to be invested to dual the full length of the A66 from Scotch Corner to Penrith with construction due to start in January 2024.  This will be the biggest infrastructure scheme in the north of England and is planned for completion by 2029. This is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, and the Development Consent Order is being submitted in May 2022.

Cumbria County Council is seeking to appoint an experienced Highway professional with relevant expertise to provide the necessary technical capacity to engage with National Highways during the detailed design and construction stages of the project.  This will include negotiating with the National Highways Project Team and advising the County Council on matters such as detrunking, departures and the proposed Construction Traffic Management Plan. The successful candidate will also work closely with National Highways during the detailed design of the project, with particular focus on scheme designs that impact on the local road network. The post will also provide advice and support on other major highways schemes led by the County Council, particularly during the early stages of their development.

It will be important to ensure that the Council’s requirements are embedded in the scheme to comply with the Highway Authority requirements and to meet the needs of the local community.

We are currently operating virtual interviews. This will preferably be undertaken using the Microsoft Teams software, which is currently free for new users, however if there are any issues with accessing this technology, we are happy to discuss alternative arrangements prior to the interviews.

Options will be discussed with candidates once they have been invited to the interview stage of the process, and if you have any concerns or adjustments are needed, we are happy to discuss.
