Sunderland is a forward-thinking city undergoing significant transformation and economic regeneration. We have a global reputation as a welcoming and inclusive place in which to live, work, invest and grow. Whilst the pandemic has presented many challenges for our communities, we emerge with a renewed energy to create a connected international Smart City that is dynamic, vibrant and healthy, with opportunities for all, and with digital and low carbon at the heart of how we operate as a Council.

Our new role of Director of Environmental Services, reporting directly to the Chief Executive, is an exciting opportunity to transform how we operate in delivering services that are of real importance to our residents. The focus will be on connecting our ground-breaking, smart innovation programmes with front-line service priorities, to create a clean, green, attractive city and neighbourhoods that have a significant, positive impact on wellbeing, investment and growth.

You will be a highly customer-focused individual, with exceptional stakeholder management skills, delivering sustainable improvement and change, maximising the use of technology to achieve our smart city objectives. We are seeking someone who is solutions focused, who can deliver incremental gains of improvement as well as large scale transformation projects. With a track record in environmental services, you will be able to evidence where you have led service change and improved standards, as well as show an affinity with our values, and take pride in making our city a vibrant, dynamic and healthy place to live, visit and play. Delivering services in a sustainable way will be a key emphasis of this role, supporting the whole Council in achieving its low carbon ambitions and deliver the City Plan - our vision for 2030.

Welcoming innovators, trailblazers, movers and shakers; Sunderland continues to revolutionise to compete globally, whilst remaining grounded and mindful of our rich heritage and culture. We believe in more – more investment, greater opportunities, wider partnerships, boundless learning, further inclusivity and widespread support. Sunderland is already demonstrating the leading attributes of an urban centre of the future as Smart City of the Year in 2020 and Digital Council of the Year in 2021.
