Leicestershire’s Hearing Support Team is looking for an enthusiastic and committed Practitioner to support the work of the Hearing Support Team. Ideally the successful applicant would understand the impact of hearing loss and have experience of working with hearing impaired children/ young people in a secondary setting.
The post would be based mainly within our Hearing Support Centre (HSC) within a mainstream secondary school and would involve working with and supporting the Specialist Teachers . Key to the role is an ability to promote language and vocabulary development, to communicate clearly and sensitively whilst demonstrating active listening skills. Careful recording, reporting and use of ICT is an expectation of the role.
Role duties and responsibilities specific to the HSC
- To work with individuals and groups of children delivering differentiated lessons, activities and specialist curriculum interventions in the HSC under the guidance of the Specialist Teachers, to enable the students to access their mainstream lessons and make progress towards their individual outcomes outlined in their Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
- To create high quality resources and classroom displays in the HSC
- To conduct individual pupil observations in mainstream lessons to ensure pupil access to learning, identifying any issues and providing feedback to HSC, LDD and teaching staff.
- To provide in class support including notetaking for HSC pupils where a need is identified by the TODs.
- To ensure recommended access arrangements are implemented as normal practice for all HI pupils.
- To monitor and troubleshoot equipment and offer support to mainstream staff re the use of equipment .
- To liase with the HST Audiology technician and parents re-equipment issues.
- To support HSC staff with day-to-day administrative duties including organising resources, HSC emails, records and contact with families.
- To deliver absence cover in the HSC
- To liaise with key departments in college to provide HSC staff with information about curriculum focus and assessments to inform planning and teaching.
- To act as a link between the Learning and Development Department (LDD) and HSC staff through attendance at weekly LDD meetings and through daily contact.
- To have an understanding of the different audiological equipment used by the pupils
- To provide informal mentoring and pastoral support to Deaf pupils in College supporting their emotional wellbeing and self-esteem; helping them overcome obstacles; and promoting high aspirations and inclusion
- To act as an advocate for Deaf pupils and promote Deaf Awareness throughout the College
- To support lunchtime clubs and promote pupil access to clubs and extra- curricular activities.
The successful applicant would be working for the Local Authority’s Hearing Support Team. Therefore the role may involve some peripatetic working with hearing impaired children and young people across the age range under the guidance of the Specialist Teachers.
We would support the successful applicant to develop their understanding of the equipment pupils use and how to check and trouble shoot.
