Job Details

Cambridgeshire County Council’s Place and Economy Directorate delivers services across areas such as transport, new infrastructure, roads and the environment. It aims to manage and deliver the growth and development of sustainable communities, meet the challenges of climate change and enhance the natural environment.

The Road Safety team sits within the Transport Strategy and Network Management Service and is looking to develop a centre of excellence within the Council across road safety disciplines. The Council has recently adopted a Vision Zero strategy aiming to eliminate road deaths and severe injuries by 2040 and is looking for people who share this ambitious vision to join the team leading on the safe road and safe road user aspects of this strategy. As a Road Safety Officer, you are the front-facing part of the Road Safety Team with local communities.

As part of the Healthy Weight programme, we have an exciting opportunity to deliver the Take 5 Walking Zones project and promote active travel to and from school. The scheme aims to encourage children and families to walk for at least part of their journey and offers increased opportunities for healthy exercise, a reduction in traffic and congestion around the school gate and improves the local environment for the whole community.

The role is full-time and fixed term until August 2023.

If you are passionate about getting children and their families more active, have good communication skills, can use initiative to think creatively and are an enthusiastic team player, then this is an excellent opportunity to join and help our growing team develop skills, knowledge, and experience in Road Safety Education and Active Sustainable Travel.

You will have expertise in Road Safety Education and engagement and be responsible for the delivery of community-based interventions targeting road user behaviour and active travel in an area of the county. This will include engaging with multiple partners and stakeholders across the emergency services, businesses, schools and other Council departments.

In return, the Council offers a variety of benefits including the Local Government Pension Scheme, flexible working, a generous annual leave allowance with the option to buy additional leave and the opportunity to play a key role in delivering an ambitious road safety strategy that will benefit all road users in Cambridgeshire.

For an informal discussion about this position, please contact Lyn Hesse, Senior Road Safety Officer at lyn.hesse@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

We are proud to serve the diverse communities of Cambridgeshire and want our workforce to be reflective of this diversity, which we believe benefits our employees, the organisation and our communities.
