Job Details

We are looking for two Apprentice Gas Heating Engineers to join a highly skilled team that is committed to providing a first class heating repairs service to the customers and staff of the City of York Council.

Fixed Term for 21 months

If you have a passion for all things mechanical and diagnostic related subjects this could be the ideal opportunity for you to complete a Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative Apprenticeship.

The Heating / Construction industry is challenging and ever changing, in this apprenticeship you will learn something new every day.

You will work within the Heating Team (Building Services) and with other teams to deliver a Heating Repairs Service to the residents of York. You will help in identifying new products and technologies associated with the Heating Industry and ways of improving the Council’s first time fix ratios.

The apprenticeship requires a commitment to study, which will include time away from the office. You will be expected to balance work responsibilities and academic studies, but we will support you along the way.

It is desirable that you have 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C (9-4) including English, Maths and Science.

You must have achieved a grade 3 or above in both English and Maths for this apprenticeship.

The training will be carried out by Leeds College of Building and full details of the apprenticeship can be found on their website level 3 gas engineering apprenticeship

Predicted grades will be accepted at application stage, but confirmation/certificates will need to be provided before any job offer is made

We will share some of the details you have included in your application form eg name; date of birth; email address; mobile number and qualifications with our appointed apprenticeship training provider for the purposes of the recruitment process.

City of York Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. We require the successful candidate to undertake an enhanced Criminal Record check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level B1: Can exploit a wide range of simple language flexibly to express much of what he/she wants. Can keep going comprehensibly, even though pausing for grammatical land lexical planning and repair is very evident, especially in longer stretches of free production.

The Council is highly committed to investing in the talent and wellbeing of our staff and can offer a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive Health and Wellbeing initiatives and a reward package which recognises your contribution. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities and, as part of our commitment to you, promote continuous Learning and Development. In addition we also offer a growing range of discounts, rewards and savings.
