Change, transformation and opportunity.

The things that matter to you and your career will create greater outcomes for Somerset’s children and young people.

This is an incredibly exciting time for Somerset, and we have bold ambitions. In April 2023 a new council will be born, bringing together the knowledge, skills, and voices of the five existing councils in Somerset, and creating one of the largest unitary councils in the UK. Our new ICS will also be forming in July 2022 and the possibilities are boundless. Such a period of change and transformation brings significant opportunity to do things differently and raise our profile on the national stage.

We’re now looking for an exceptional Assistant Director of Children’s Commissioning and Performance. Reporting to the Director of Children’s Services, you’ll work in partnership with the NHS, the voluntary sector, and colleagues across the Council to create high-performing and cost-effective services to improve the life chances of our children and young people in Somerset.

One of our key priorities is developing our early help offer and you’ll have lead responsibility for driving this forward as part of our systemic strengths-based practice model, increasing the resilience of families and constructively managing demand. The SEND agenda will also be a key focus, and, working closely with the NHS, you’ll ensure these critical services are both effective and sustainable. Maintaining the innovation in responding to the care sufficiency challenge will also be a priority.

With significant senior management experience in commissioning, you’ll have a proven track record of service improvement. An inspirational leader, you’ll have strong people management skills and an ability to empower staff. We are open to different professional backgrounds and would welcome applications to both existing Assistant Directors as well as those looking for the next step in their career. We are also open to those who would be looking to undertake this role 4 days a week as opposed to 5.

This is an exceptional opportunity for someone to join an ambitious Council on the cusp of significant change and transformation, to develop innovative services and to make your mark.
