Job Details

We’re the Transport Team at the City of York Council and we work alongside our residents, businesses and academic providers to develop and improve the transport systems in and around our award-winning city.

Transport is a significant contributor to the city’s carbon footprint and it is important that we deliver improvements to our transport networks in order to achieve our goals of net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

As the Local Highway Authority we have responsibility for providing and operating key transport infrastructure. This means that by joining our team you’ll have the opportunity to deliver a wide range of sustainable transport projects that will have a real impact upon the city.

We’re looking for a Project Manager that is comfortable using common project management methods to control the costs, timescales, risks, scope, quality and benefits of assigned sustainable transport projects.

Supported by a team of in-house transport specialists and contracted consultants, your focus will be on steering projects through defined gateways all the way from project inception to post-construction, ensuring that the projects meet their defined sustainability targets.

Whilst a background in Transport is beneficial, this role is focussed on the discipline of project management. As such, day to day activities will involve engaging with stakeholders, creating project plans, managing risks, procuring project services and ensuring effective governance in line with the corporate project management methodology.

Our tailored induction programme will offer you the support you need to hit the ground running whilst allowing you freedom to develop your own unique offer. Whether you are newly qualified or you have already started your career elsewhere, we will empower, trust and stretch you from day one to build your own relationships with key clients, assist with finding solutions to issues affecting the way our resident’s travel throughout the City and take on responsibility to demonstrate your unique capabilities.

You’ll be supported by specialist teams that will assist you with procurement, legal advice, transport planning and modelling, communications and consultations, and any other specialist expertise required. Your focus will be on co-ordinating and managing the many and varied providers to support overall project delivery and realisation of sustainability benefits.

Our hybrid working approach gives you the opportunity to work from home or the office, depending on the specific demands of the projects you are working on as well as your own personal preferences.

This is a great opportunity to make a real difference in how people get about the city and to develop your career in a supportive and exciting work environment.

The Council is committed to investing in the talent and wellbeing of our staff and can offer a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive Health & Wellbeing initiatives and a reward package which recognises your contribution. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities and, as part of our commitment to you, promote continuous Learning & Development. In addition we also offer a growing range of discounts, rewards and savings.

At the moment due to the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, some of our staff are working remotely from home but a return to a combination of working remotely and physically from the Council’s offices is anticipated in the near future.

As a new starter, your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team. Your working arrangements will vary according to your service and role, and the current Government guidance. For many roles, there will be more opportunities in the future for remote and hybrid working. However, this comes with the expectation that, as workplaces open up, there is likely to be an ongoing and occasional requirement to attend the workplace
