Job Details

Are you driven by more than just the bottom line?  Want to be more than just an Accountant?

We are a huge yet dynamic organisation employing over 15,000 people and we spend in excess of £1 billion each year delivering council services across North Yorkshire.  We own multi-million pound turnover companies that operate in the private sector building broadband infrastructure, building and maintaining roads and disposing of and recycling waste.  Our Finance Team also administer the North Yorkshire Pension Fund, managing the scheme and investing its multi-billion pound assets.  Although focussed on supporting our local communities across North Yorkshire we very much have a national and global outlook.

This is an exciting opportunity for professionals qualified to at least level 4 AAT or equivalent qualification to join an ambitious team.  We are entering a period of considerable change and transformation as eight councils merge into one in April 2023 as a result of Local Government Reorganisation in the county.  You will make a real contribution, stretching your abilities to overcome challenges and benefitting from the resulting opportunities and rewards. Your workload will be diverse offering many opportunities to channel your talents and develop your career as you could be:

  • supporting improvement projects
  • helping departments to set accurate budgets for the services they deliver
  • involved in strategic financial planning
  • developing our commercial effectiveness
  • supporting Treasury Management and producing statutory accounts
  • designing, developing and implementing new processes, working with our IT colleagues to ensure we maximise the potential of our extensive suite of finance systems including Oracle and SAGE

Add to this the satisfaction of contributing to the achievement of great outcomes for our community, using your professional finance skills to help deliver services that make a positive change to people’s lives – very often the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in our communities, and it adds up to a rewarding and stimulating role….. more than just an Accountant, you will be driven by more than just the bottom line!

North Yorkshire Finance is an innovative, proactive and friendly service with an excellent reputation both within the council and across the wider public sector.  Our team of 75 professionals provides you with a considerable support network of advice and expertise so you are never on your own.  We value your potential and welcome applicants no matter what your career background, as your finance skills and knowledge are both adaptable and diverse.  Current team members have joined us from both public and private sectors where they were systems accountants, management and practice accountants.  We champion career development through training courses and opportunities to experience work in other accountancy disciplines through our role rotation approach.

All our lives have changed over the past couple of years so we also recognise the importance of your life outside work.  We offer benefits including flexi-time, hybrid home/office working and a generous leave entitlement which all help towards ensuring you enjoy a sustainable work life balance.   We also provide a generous defined benefit pension and staff discount scheme.  Support packages are also available for you to study for accountancy qualifications through our salary sacrifice scheme. Full details of the benefits available are here Total Rewards Brochure.pdf

Whilst you are applying for a vacancy with an individual district, Borough or the County Council, if successful, you will become an employee of this council only up to March 2023. From April 2023 your employment contract will migrate to a newly formed unitary Council. Whilst the change to form one organisation can bring the feeling of uncertainty, the vast majority of staff will be unaffected.

The County of North Yorkshire is the largest County in England and Wales. Within the county are 598 square miles of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and 530 square miles of the North York Moors National Park. The county is included in the Yorkshire and Humberside Region.

Whilst the economy of the County has traditionally been dependent on agriculture and tourism, there is a fast growing high technology base and this, together with other forms of light manufacturing industry, is of increasing importance. The County Council has an active policy of economic development and the predominantly rural character of the County is highly attractive to high technology businesses as well as the traditional industries of farming, food production and tourism. The County contains several centres of great historic interest, market towns that invite light industrial development, the modern coalfield area in the South, scenic, lightly populated upland areas and the extensive lowland area in the Vale of York.
