An exciting opportunity to make a positive difference to the lives of children and young people with Special Educational Needs has arisen in the School Organisation and Resources Team at Northumberland County Council.

The School Organisation and Resources Team is based within the Education and Skills Group in the Council, with responsibility for a range of statutory and support services, including school place planning, school admissions, schools capital projects, inclusion and schools funding.

The SEN Finance Officer will be an important member of the School Organisation and Resources Team. You will be responsible for the management of High Needs Funding, which provides vital additional support to children and young people in a wide variety of settings both within and outside Northumberland. This is a significant responsibility for a budget in excess of £40 million, so you will need extensive experience of financial management.

Reporting to the Education and Skills Business Manager, you will take the lead in liaising and managing finances for this complex area, working closely with and providing advice to other Education and Council colleagues, as well as Schools, other Local Authorities and Government departments such as the Department for Education.

The post is a full time permanent role

The organisation has a “hybrid working” model, which allows an agreed percentage of time working from home as department needs allow.

Who are we looking for?

All round excellent communication skills are required together with the ability to work independently, preparing reports and interpreting and explaining complex data to a range of stakeholders. The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.

You will have knowledge of education funding streams and excellent ICT skills including Microsoft Office.

You will also have a flexible approach and be able to contribute to wider School Organisation and Resources Team objectives and initiatives. You will also be able to plan and forecast accurately, working

closely with the SEN Commissioning and Place Planning Officer in developing systems to accurate forecast financial commitments on a short, medium and long term basis.
