Help us be the best local authority in the country

The Mayor’s Office here at Kensington & Chelsea is an exciting place to work.  We’re a small team supporting the Mayor in his high-profile and important work as the Borough’s ‘first citizen’, connecting with local residents and with the many organisations who play a key and often unsung part in Borough life.

The Mayoralty remains at the heart of the Council’s committed efforts to foster trust and understanding with the local community and the Mayor, distinct from the Council’s political leadership, is uniquely placed to make connections by getting ‘out and about’ visiting people and organisations, and by welcoming people to the Mayor’s Parlour.

The Role:

The Mayor’s Office comprises five staff (three office-based, plus two chauffeurs) and is a small, focused team at the heart of the Council with connections across the whole organisation and across the Borough.  As Civic Officer you will play a key role in the team, increasingly trusted to take a lead on aspects of the team’s work and deputise when the Senior Civic Officer is away.

Your role arranging and supporting the Mayor’s visits and in-house events will quickly bring you in contact with senior councillors and officers and with a range of high profile people.  This makes the job varied and exciting, with no two days quite the same, but it does mean that you’ll have to maintain high standards in all you do, observe protocol, and often ‘think on your feet’.   So you will at all times need to demonstrate impartial professionalism, confidence and an instinctive feel for how best to support the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and to resolve issues arising.  You will also play an important role in developing and embedding IT solutions and other systems that best ensure the Mayor’s Office can deliver an efficient and responsive service over the coming years.

About You:

If you’ve already had a few years working in this or a related area – perhaps in events management or democratic services, or perhaps as a PA to a senior manager in a large organisation, and can demonstrate a clear enthusiasm for the role of the Civic Mayor in local government and its unique ability to reach out and make connections within the community, then there is no better place for you to come to develop your career.  You will thrive here if you are a confident and proactive individual who enjoys meeting people and building relationships; who relishes finding solutions to problems; who can quickly adapt to change; and who wants actively to pursue opportunities for professional development.

You will have exceptional oral and written communication skills and be willing to embrace a highly flexible, hybrid working model which will involve evening work a few times each month supporting Mayoral events.

Please apply online explaining how you meet the requirements set out in the person specification and job description. CV’s alone will not be considered for this role.
