The Council

The Service
Trading Standards and Animal Health forms part of the wider remit of the Business Compliance and Public Safety Unit. In turn, this sits within the Council’s Housing and Public Protection Service. Whilst operationally managed by the Trading Standards and Animal Health Manager as a single team and integrated working is encouraged, Trading Standards and Animal Health are two separate functions with their own dedicated officers, each led by a Senior Trading Standards Officer.

The Role
A rare opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and suitably skilled individual to join our well-established team as an Animal Health Inspector. We are looking for a confident and positive thinking person with a ‘can do’ attitude and a flexible approach. Previous experience in a farming environment or other demonstrable ability to handle livestock is critical. The ideal candidate will also have some level of experience in a regulatory role though a background in animal welfare or the diagnosis of notifiable animal diseases is of equal value.

We are offering:
- A permanent position
- A salary of £24,982 - £27,741 (Band 6), £28,672 - £32,234 (Band 7)
- Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme
- A wide range of staff benefits including competitive annual leave provision
- Flexible working arrangements

Essential requirements
Essential criteria for appointment at either band 6 or band 7 grading includes:
- Experience in handling livestock
- a minimum of 5 GCSES at A-C grades (or equivalent) including English and Maths
- The applicant must be over 18 years of age

Due to the nature of the role, existing formal qualifications beyond GCSE (or equivalent) level are not essential, but the appointed person must have the academic ability to complete a relevant competency qualification if one is not already held.

Appointment to band 7 is subject to production of a relevant competency certificate. Otherwise, appointment will be made at band 6.
