The Council’s Highways Service is looking to appoint a Bridges Team Leader to support the Network Management Team, by managing the 232 bridges (and other structures) across Wakefield Council’s highway network, including the Wakefield Chantry Chapel Bridge (a Scheduled Ancient Monument) and one of only four such bridges left in the UK. 

The role will manage the Council’s stock of bridges and highway structures in accordance with appropriate legislation and codes of practice. The role will ensure the safety and availability of the highway structures through a robust inspection regime; the results of which will be used to develop, manage and deliver future programmes of work using resources both internal and external to the Council. 

The Bridges Team Leader will ensure that all new structures affecting the highway are designed, specified and built in accordance with current standards and specifications and will ensure that all structures are approved by the Technical Approval Authority (TAA).

In addition to managing Wakefield Council bridges, the post holder will liaise with other bridge owners and other parties to ensure that all works by other bridge owners or third parties on the highway network meet current applicable standards.

The post holder will manage a small team of technical officers that carry out inspection and maintenance works.

The successful candidate will be an experienced, confident, self-motivated and organised and chartered bridge engineer with the ability to bring together their technical and management skills together with their excellent communication skills.

The position is currently based in modern offices in the centre of Wakefield city within close proximity of excellent public transport facilities at Westgate railway station and the central bus station. Excellent facilities and benefits are provided for those that cycle to work. The post holder will be expected to attend site meetings and pool cars are available for these duties when required.
