Working Days: Monday - Friday or Tuesday - Saturday on alternate weeks

Working Hours: 8am (earliest start) - 5pm (latest finish) dependent on routes (37-hour week)

Please note this is a fixed term role with a duration of 12 months. The role is based out of Witham, Essex, but will be driving the mobile library across villages in Essex on a 3-week rota system.

The mobile library service is instrumental in providing a library service to our harder to reach residents due to mobility or geographical constraints.

The Mobile Library Supervisor has a sound working knowledge of Customer Services and specific business processes. They provide an efficient and effective mobile library service by carrying out the day-to-day operation, driving and supervision of mobile library services, maintaining a high level of customer care, acting as the first point of contact for public access to council services and undertaking a range of tasks that support the delivery of a quality service.

They assist in promoting and providing the library outreach program throughout the county, including to audiences identified in the Outreach Service plan.

  • Accountabilities

  • To welcome library users and help to deliver a quality service, working at the base or other appropriate Library as required
  • To undertake all stock circulation procedures including: issue and discharge of loanable items, membership routines, reservation procedures, stock maintenance, overdue procedures, to sort, shelve and tidy returned material, to collect fines and other income, to liaise with library staff on stock exchange and other procedures including attendance at meetings as required.
  • To maintain and clean the vehicles in accordance with the requirements set out on the daily log sheet book including delivery and collection of vehicles for maintenance/repair.
  • To help customers with their enquiries and use information communications technology (ICT) equipment where provided.
  • To deliver books and equipment as required.
  • To comply with the individual (and line management) responsibilities for Health Safety & Welfare in the workplace, including ensuring safeguarding children, in accordance with work role.
  • To participate in training and development and be responsible for self-development.
  • To support the implementation of the Service Plan, being proactive in the promotion and marketing of all services, to contribute to the provision of statistical returns and to be involved in informal customer consultation.
  • To carry out such other appropriate duties as may be required.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Current HGV class 2 driving licence and able to drive a 12-ton vehicle
  • Experience of driving large vehicles and carrying out routine vehicle checks
  • At least 21 years old (for insurance purposes)
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a customer focused environment.
  • Future and improvement focused approach, embracing and advocating change with the ability to deliver new ways of working.
  • Able to deliver quality customer service, understanding of dealing with elderly people
  • Understanding of working within a Local Authority or other complex organisation.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures and processes.
  • Knowledge of Data Protection (GDPR) and Freedom of Information legislation.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information to identify trends.
  • Please note that the job role requires you to be mobile throughout an operational area. Therefore, the post holder will need to have a driving licence and access to a vehicle, or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means.
