Sitting in the heart of the West Midlands, Sandwell is made up of six historic towns. Hard working and proud of their Black Country heritage, the people who call the borough their home have faced many challenges with strength and resilience and are looking to the future with ambition and determination. Sandwell is the 27th largest Local Authority by population and is home to a diverse range of communities.

The Sandwell Aquatics Centre, the only new venue built for the Commonwealth Games, the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, the extension to the Midlands Metro Line, the thousands of planned new homes – these projects provide a platform to put Sandwell on the map and establish the borough as a place of opportunity and aspirations. We have a great challenge ahead in our £1.8 billion regeneration pipeline and receiving the largest Towns Fund award in the country; taken together Sandwell is heading in the right direction.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As part of our ambitious plan for the future, we’re looking for a new Chief Executive. Bring your experience and imagination to this vitally important role and your primary focus will be on the needs of our residents, and helping everyone who lives, works, learns and plays in the borough to fulfil their amazing potential. You’ll also build on the Council’s positive and confident approach to the future and use all your diplomatic skills to navigate the issues and challenges we face.

We’re currently working on a wide range of important improvement and regeneration projects, and you’ll be expected to be a motivating leader behind these. They include the retrofitting of our stock of council houses, the creation of cleaner, safer neighbourhoods, the levelling up of inequalities that exist in the borough and ensuring the differences in our communities are addressed and resolved. Your other key tasks will be to engage positively with our external partners, put practice and performance management principles in place, improve on our commitments to customer service and sustainability, and work towards major budgetary savings.

Over the last few years Sandwell has faced some enormous challenges, but we’ve learned the lessons of the past and are committed to moving forward with strength and confidence. As Chief Executive you’ll be the driving force behind this new-found optimism, and your vision and success will bring enormous rewards.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

Inspirational, motivating and imaginative – to be a success in this role, these are the qualities you’ll bring to Sandwell. But more than this, you’ll be down to earth, humble and plain speaking, the sort of person who cares about culturally diverse communities and knows how to get the best out of everyone you’ll work with.

With a clear focus on improvement, transformation and creating a supportive culture, you’ll have experience of managing interventions, and the ability to make evidence-based decisions and hold people accountable for their actions. Capable of working with politicians, officers, commissioners and members, you’ll have an outward focus and experience of bidding for funding opportunities.

Ready to set and develop new frameworks and change the narrative of the Council by focusing on the positives of the borough, you’ll live and breathe the values of Sandwell, and inspire others through your commitment to the people of our communities, and your optimism for the future.

Sandwell is committed to ensuring that services we provide embrace diversity, promote equality of opportunity and access. As an employer we are committed to equality and valuing diversity within our workforce.  Our goal is to ensure that this commitment is embedded in our day to day working practices with all our customers, colleagues and partners
