The Land Drainage and Flood Risk Management Section of the Council has an interesting and challenging workload in reducing flooding across the district and we are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our team.

Wakefield District covers an area of 337km2, there are about 120 watercourses across the district with a combined length of over 300km.

The overall purpose of the post is to work as part of the Land Drainage and Flood Risk Management Team to reduce the risk of flooding in Wakefield District and to ensure that the Council fulfils its duties both under the Land Drainage and the Floods and Water Management Act.

As a member of the Section you will be involved in a variety of work areas, assisting more senior officers, including the Councils drainage response to planning applications, feasibility, design and construction of flood alleviation schemes.  The role will involve the preparation of contract documents and supervision of contractors on site.

Initially this role will focus mainly on the Environmental aspects of the Teams’s work including assisting with the Environmental Maintenance of flood mitigations ponds.  It will also include being involved in the investigation of flooding issues.

Some relevant background experience is desirable and in house training within the team will be given and additional external training will be available if required.  You will be working within a multi-disciplinary team who work closely together to provide the support and guidance necessary to achieve its objectives.

Flooding to people’s property is a distressing and emotional event and as part of your role you will be liaising with local residents that have been flooded, Councillors and officers from other Council sections so good communications skills are essential.

The work involves being both outside and in the office, as part of a team but often unaccompanied.  As the work involves visiting a number of sites around the district a full driving license is desirable at level 1 and essential for levels 2 & 3.  A casual car allowance scheme is in operation and pool cars are available.

The role offers a full range of local government terms and conditions including flexible working, pension and access to further qualifications based training funded by the Council’s Apprenticeship Levy.
