SHiFT Tendring Partnership: SHiFT Tendring is a unique partnership hosted by Essex County Council (ECC), with staff employed on a fixed-term basis or secondment. Supported by SHiFT and guided by the Breaking Cycles™ practice model, we aim to make a lasting impact.
The Role
As a SHiFT Guide you will be qualified in the field of social work, probation, or youth work with substantial experience in working with children who needs are such that intensive support is needed to enable them to lead the best in life. An ability to work alongside families and other partner agencies is vital.
Professional supervision is provided through the Team Manager and supported by the SHiFT supervision model of weekly child and family practice discussions led by a dual qualified social worker/systemic therapist is a vital foundation of this model.
Key Responsibilities
Engage with Children and Young People: Work with hard-to-engage individuals up to 21 years old, using evidence-informed practice and the SHiFT Breaking Cycles approach.
Commitment to Anti-Racist Practice: Improve outcomes for troubled children with a small caseload (up to 6 children).
Collaborative Work: Support the SHiFT Team Manager in multi-agency and multi-disciplinary networks to drive system change.
Professional Oversight: Participate in practice discussions, supervision, and observation sessions.
Adherence to Standards: Meet ECC, Children and Family Services (CFS) and SHiFT practice standards in recording and assessments.
Safeguarding: Follow ECC CFS and SHiFT procedures for child protection and safeguarding.
Support Decision Making: Work with the team to use personal budgets for child enrichment activities.
Travel and Flexibility: Have a full UK driving licence and be flexible with working hours, including evenings and emergencies.
Skills and knowledge
- A qualified and registered Social Worker, Probation Worker or Youth Worker
- Extensive experience of working with children / young people or young adults with complex needs for example in criminal justice or care setting and an understanding of the issues that affect young people and children in particular risk in the community.
- Fundamental practice-based understanding of relevant children's legislation and of evidence informed practice.
- Excellent communication skills and IT literate and ensure high quality recording on both CFS and SHiFT case management systems.
- An ability to work on your own initiative and manage competing demands when under pressure and awareness of own strengths and area for development and a commitment to continuous professional development.
- Strong commitment to anti racist practice.
- Adept at working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and across organisational boundaries.

The role requires you to be mobile throughout a wider operational area including travelling around the county of Essex and beyond, transporting service users and their belongings and to be able to do so in an emergency. Driving licence and car or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means is essential.
